Exercise Physiology

Exercise physiology is treatment is delivered by Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEP). AEP's create exercise programs for those who experience injury, have a disability or chronic illness (like cancer). They are the experts in exercise prescription for the treatment and management of chronic health conditions.

Exercise and Cancer

In childhood and adolescent cancer survivors, exercise is extremely important for their long-term health and development.  Currently, exercise is recommended as standard practice in cancer care.  Not only is it extremely safe, but it can effectively counteract many of the adverse physical and psychological effects of cancer and the cancer treatment.

The exercise doesn't need to be strenuous, even the lightest bit of exercise can have a positive impact.  Everyone goes through and finishes treatment with different capacities for exercise. It is the Exercise Physiologists job to prescribe exercise based on the individuals capacity and their goals.

Unfortunately, cancer treatment comes with a list of side effects that can impact an individual well into survivorship.  Late-adverse effects are also common, where complications arise months or years post the finishing of treatment, and they can impact so many of the bodies systems - cardiorespiratory, endocrine, metabolic, musculoskeletal, and neurocognitive.

The exercise prescription we provide, focuses on battling those side-effects head on.  Our goal is helping children and teenagers return back to what they enjoy most - whether that be playing on a playground, riding their bike with friends or participating in a sporting environment or the gym. Unfortunately cancer can impact skill development, overall strength, balance and stability, and mobility, and our goal is to combat that.
